Plagiarism Accusation Against Dr. Sangiliyandi Gurunathan and His Group
What is Plagiarism ?
Plagiarism
is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or
expressions as one's own original work. In educational contexts, there are
differing definitions of plagiarism depending on the institution.
The word plagiarism has come from the Latin word ‘plagiarius,’ which means to kidnap. Plagiarism is to steal and pass off ideas or words of another as one’s own. It is presenting someone else's work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement.

Accusation Against Dr. Sangiliyandi Gurunathan and His Group
The Nov/Dec 2010 edition
of the Biotechnology Advances journal brought out a notice that accused Dr.
Sangiliyandi Gurunathan and his group of plagiarizing an article on “Division
of Molecular and Cellular Biology,” Kalasalingam University. The accusation led
to the retraction of the paper from the journal.
“Isolation
and characterization of goat retinal microvascular endothelial cells,” by Gurunathan Sangiliyandi has been
retracted at the request of the Editors as it contains fraudulently manipulated
data. Our investigation has found at least two instances of data
misrepresentation in this paper. In, the 12 h/10%FBS and 24 h/1%FBS
photomicrographs are identical as are the 24 h/10%FBS and 36 h/10%FBS photomicrographs. It have also found that instances of image duplication in the 0 h/1%FBS, 0 h/10%FBS,
12 h/1%FBS and 24 h/1%FBS photomicrographs. As such, this article represents a
severe abuse of the scientific publishing system.
The scientific community and
the Editors take a very strong view on this matter, and apologies are offered
to readers of the journal that this problem was not detected during the
submission and review process.
Kalasalingam
University recently took strong action against a Professor and 6 PhD students
for scientific misconduct which included data manipulation and plagiarism. Dr.
G Sangliyandi, Senior Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, and
Dean, International Relations, Kalasalingam University was directed to resign
from the University. The 6 PhD students involved had their registrations
cancelled.
His name has
been removed from the Department of Biotechnology page at the university
website but still appeared on the International Relations page last week.
